SCANDICCI, September 5, 2025 – GEST announces that the work to replace the worn tracks on the curve between Viale Rosselli and Via Iacopo da Diacceto has been successfully completed ahead of schedule. Starting Sunday, September 7, Line T1 will resume regular service, with the reopening of the section between “Porta al Prato – Leopolda” and “Alamanni Stazione S. M. N.”
The curve, originally built in 2010 as a switch and characterized by a unique geometry, underwent a major structural intervention: approximately 160 meters of rails were replaced over a 40-meter stretch. The most significant operation involved demolishing and rebuilding the civil works, including the removal of the porphyry pavement, cutting of the switch, laying of a new concrete slab, and installation of the rails with an updated geometry. All road elements – from the porphyry stones to the drainage grates – were carefully dismantled and reinstalled, restoring the curve to its original appearance.
“We had promised to complete the work before schools reopened, and we are extremely pleased to have met the deadline, despite some unforeseen challenges and weather-related difficulties. From the first run on Sunday, September 7, Line T1 will resume regular service. A special thanks goes to the external contractors and GEST workers who worked tirelessly to meet the timeline,” said GEST CEO Denis Ratto.
“The full reopening of Line T1 is excellent news. This was a necessary maintenance intervention to ensure top-quality service, and we’re pleased it was completed ahead of schedule, allowing citizens to fully use the line again. We thank GEST, with whom we have a strong team effort, and the citizens and tram users for their patience during this period. The tramway is increasingly appreciated and used – data shows that in the first six months of the year, it recorded 22.7 million passengers, a 20% increase compared to 2024. We remain committed to an efficient, high-quality, and sustainable tram system that connects the city,” said Mayor Sara Funaro.
“We’re proud to be able to restore such a vital service to citizens ahead of schedule. In a summer full of impactful construction sites – after the Bolognese and the Indiano viaduct – even the T1 works are finishing earlier than expected. This is great news, especially since it was a delicate intervention on a crucial service for the city, widely used by Florentines, commuters, and tourists. It’s an important result, the fruit of teamwork and collaboration with GEST, with whom we managed the inevitable inconveniences, always paying close attention to and listening to citizens’ needs. We apologize for the disruptions, but we are aware that these were essential works for safety and comfort,” commented Andrea Giorgio, Councillor for Mobility, Roads, and Tramways.
This was the most complex maintenance intervention ever carried out on Florence’s tram network, part of a broader program that includes dozens of daily activities aimed at ensuring the safety of the infrastructure, which is constantly monitored and inspected by GEST’s maintenance teams.
